Memorial Day, a solemn federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May, pays tribute to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States military. It is a time to reflect on their service, honor their memory, and offer support to their bereaved families.

A Rich Heritage

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, has a long and poignant history. In the aftermath of the Civil War, citizens placed flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers to symbolize remembrance and mourning. By the end of the 19th century, the day had become a national holiday, a time for all Americans to remember those who had given their lives for their country.

A Day for Reflection

Memorial Day is a day for reflection and gratitude. It is a time to remember the sacrifices of our service members and their families, to honor their legacy, and to recommit ourselves to the ideals for which they fought. It is also a day to remember those who lost their lives in armed conflicts overseas, and to offer our support to veterans and their families.

Honoring the Fallen

Throughout the United States, communities hold Memorial Day parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and other events to honor the fallen. Cemeteries are adorned with American flags and flowers, and families gather to pay their respects to their loved ones. In addition, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs sponsors a nationwide Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day, inviting all Americans to pause for a moment of silence and reflection.
