Sanders: Billionaires are against democracy

Vermont senator speaks out against wealthy Trump supporters

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Thursday ripped into billionaires who are supporting President Donald Trump, accusing them of putting their own financial interests ahead of the country's democracy.

"These billionaires are not just giving up on democracy, they are actively trying to destroy it," Sanders said in a statement. "They are using their wealth to buy elections, silence dissent, and rig the system in their favor."

Sanders' comments come as a new report from the Institute for Policy Studies found that the top 1% of earners in the United States own more wealth than the bottom 90% combined. The report also found that the gap between the rich and the poor has been growing wider in recent years.

"This is not just a moral outrage, it is an economic and political disaster," Sanders said. "We cannot have a democracy when a handful of billionaires have more power than the rest of us combined."

Sanders called on Congress to pass legislation to break up large corporations and redistribute wealth to the middle class. He also called for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United decision, which allows corporations and unions to spend unlimited amounts of money on political campaigns.

"We need to take back our democracy from the billionaires," Sanders said. "We need to create a government that works for all of us, not just the one percent."
